On Tuesday, March 7, 2017, Justice Walter Onnoghen of the Supreme Court took his oath of office and allegiance before Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to become the functional Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). This is the following Onnoghen’s appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari on November 10, 2016 as the Acting Justice of Nigeria.
Onnoghen’s name was sent to the Senate on February 7, 2017 by Acting President Osinbajo for confirmation following the constitutional provisions. The senate on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 screened and confirmed his nomination. Onnoghen who hails from Cross River State will be the 20th person to occupy the position since 1914, according to judiciary records.
Acting President Osinbajo reminded the new Chief Justice Nigeria (CJN) of the huge task ahead of him, saying the fate of millions of Nigerians was now placed in his hands for justice. Also, the new CJN pledged to uphold the rule of law and ensure the independence of the judiciary.
