Motorists and commuters were surprised yesterday when a man ordered his driver to pull over, a Nissan X-Trail, and jumped into the Lagos Lagoon at the Adekunle axis of the 3rd Mainland Bridge.
The man, said to be a medical doctor, was identified simply as Dr. Orji. In a video clip on the social media, Orji’s driver said the doctor told him to park before he jumped into the lagoon.
The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Tiamiyu Adeshina, confirmed the incident. He said: “The agency received a distress call of a man who parked his grey coloured Nissan SUV with registration number LND 476 EE about 4:50pm today (yesterday) Sunday, 19th March 2017 around Adekunle, inward 3rd Mainland Bridge and jumped into the Lagos Lagoon.
“Preliminary investigation at the scene revealed that the man said to be medical doctor named Orji, who was said to be driven by his driver and suddenly ordered the driver to pull over, alighted from the car and suddenly jumped into the water from the bridge.”
Tiamiyu added that the vehicle and the driver had been taken to Adeniji Adele Police Station for further investigation while effort was on to recover his body from the lagoon.
The LASEMA boss said proper investigation would be conducted on the incident by the appropriate authorities. But when contacted on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Olarinde Famous-Cold, said he would call our correspondent back. He, however, did not call at press time. Thereafter, Famous-Cole neither picked his calls nor responded to a WhatsApp message on the issue.
