Former Governor of Delta Sstate, Chief James Onanefe Ibori is back in the country. Ibori was released from the UK prisons after serviing half of a 13 year jail term for money laundering. He was sentenced in April 2012 for laundering nearly 50 million pounds. Ibori’s wife and mistress were also sentenced to jail terms.
Ibori was arrested in Dubai in 2010 after he fled from a similar money laundering trial in Nigeria. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is yet to issue a statement regarding Ibori’s possible arrest. The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari made fighting corruption one of its cardinal points.
James Ibori was a two term governor in oil rich Delta state from 1999-2007. He was also alleged to have funded the campaign of late president Umaru Yaradua.
Ex-Delta state governor, James Ibori, arrived Nigeria in the early hours of Saturday, February 4 after serving a 13 year jail term slammed on him by a court in the United Kingdom.. He was however, whisked away by DSS operatives on arriving Nigeria on Saturday. Sources say he questioned over criminal activities he might have committed during his tenure as the governor of Delta state.
According to TheCable, an official of the secret agents said it should not be interpreted as an “arrest”. He said: “It was pre-arranged that he should have a chat with the DSS director-general, Lawal Daura, upon his arrival.
“He will not be detained. His appointment was for 12:00 hrs so the operatives went to pick him up and drove him down for the meeting."
Ibori was released later after a meeting with the with the director-general, Lawal Daura.
According to Vanguard, he left immediately for Oghara, his country home in Ethiope East local government area of the state.
The former governor of Delta state, Chief James Ibori eventually arrived Benin Airport in Edo state, at 2.30 pm on a private plane.
Politicians, friends and associates of Ibori were eagerly waiting for his return to Delta state at the Osubi Airport, Osubi, near Warri but he landed in Benin instead.
However the crowd waiting for him at Osubi Airport, Warri, has started moving to Oghara as soon as they got information that he landed in Benin City. He landed to a massive crowd who joyfully welcomed him.
Meanwhile, the British government this morning, February 4, issued a statement stating that it would continue the legal process to confiscate the proceeds of the former governor’s loot, which would then be returned to Nigeria.
His arrival shook the community . Meanwhile, his arrival has generated a lot of reactions from Nigerians, many of who condemned the celebration.
